What Is Problem Solving?

Problem Solving (PS) empowers your team to proactively address challenges instead of waiting for others to resolve them or simply expressing concerns about the situation. PS adds systematic and active problem solving to the skills that TWI’s core programs deliver in Job Instruction (JI), Job Relations (JR), Job Methods (JM) and Job Safety (JS).

Both supervisors and workers learn to recognize the early signs of any problem that will impact workflow, production and output, teamwork, safety, quality and customer satisfaction. They will be able to pinpoint problem areas and identify causes — be they direct, indirect, personal, physical or cultural.

Our JI, JR, JM and JS programs provide the modeling that team members need for proposing solutions, correcting problems and evaluating results. The structured and systematic approach of PS ensures that problem solving becomes integrated with their existing work skills and virtually second nature.

What We Will Cover

Problem Solving, as is the case with all TWI Institute programs, is focused on supervisors, team leaders and workers themselves. PS provides a proven and reliable system for elevating the type of engagement and participation that advances ongoing or planned continuous improvement, kaizen, Lean and operational excellence initiatives.

Our end-to-end programming assures adoption and continuation of these benefits. Your TWI Institute coach will meet with management, managers, trainers, supervisors and team leaders to observe your TWI PS implementation. Your coach will gauge progress, identify problems, suggest solutions and help realign goals.

  • Defining the nature and types of problems
  • Understanding the relationship between problems and results
  • Exploring causes, direct and indirect, physical, personal and cultural
  • Learning to use the Problem 4-Step Model
    1. Isolate and state the problem
    2. Prepare for the solution collect evidence, assess impact
    3. Correct the problem: improve skills, modify behavior, improve methods
    4. Check and evaluate results
  • Differentiating between short- and long-term solutions and their effects
  • Managing for change and mitigating disruption
